Before Any Cherry Picker Leaves the Yard: IPAF’s 2026 Push on Pre-Use Checks

A contractor working on a gutter clearance job in Ringwood called us in a hurry last month needing a truck-mounted platform for the following morning, and the first question our team asked wasn’t about outreach or price, it was what the access was actually for and what checks would need doing on site before anyone went up. That’s become more than routine this year — IPAF’s global “Check It!” campaign, launched across 2026, is putting pre-use inspection back at the centre of every hire, after six fatalities linked to mechanical or technical failure on powered access equipment were recorded in a single year.

Every machine that leaves our depot off the A31 near Saint Leonards gets checked before it goes and again by the operator before it’s used — hydraulics, outriggers, the emergency lowering system and interlocks, not just a walk-round. Our fleet ranges from the Bronto 38 XDT, with outreach up to 25.8m, through to the Ruthmann T330 at 33m working height on only an 8.43m vehicle length, so there’s usually a machine that fits the access rather than forcing the job to suit whatever’s free.

All our operators are IPAF trained and we handle traffic management ourselves where a job needs the platform set up on a road or verge, which covers most of what we do around Ringwood, Wimborne and Ferndown. We can usually get equipment to Poole, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Southampton or Salisbury within the hour depending on traffic, and we’ll cross-hire through other operators if we haven’t got the right machine on our own yard.
